A moment of history :
At the beginning, the place was called the Mont-Tombe.
708 : It is the bishop Aubert who decides to build the first sanctuary in honor of the Archangel.
966 : It is inhabited by Benedictines only at this date, at the request of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I. Thereafter, it becomes a high place of pilgrimage of the Occident. Manuscripts from all periods are also found there and the area is thus transformed into a "City of Books".
When you visit Mont-Saint-Michel, don't forget to look up. The architecture of the site offers tourists moldings and sculptures of a historical context evolving with the years.
This fortress faced the English during the Hundred Years' War and went through a thousand and one battles. Today, only 29 people live on the Mount, including 12 brothers and sisters of the monastic brotherhood of Jerusalem.

Access the site by your means of transportation

By car
A parking lot is available to leave your vehicle during your visit of the site. Then, take place in one of the shuttles provided.
If you are staying on the Mont, the hotel will provide you with an access code to park in a different parking lot.
By motor home
A parking lot dedicated to motor homes has been installed upstream of the bridge to reach the Mont-Saint-Michel. Nevertheless, you will not be allowed to sleep on this parking area.
The ferryman
Whatever your means of transport, the ferryman is waiting for you to get to the Mont. In summer as in winter, it makes multiple rotations and is accessible to all.
It was created to blend into the landscape without distorting the beauty of the site.
