Discover the Christian Dior Museum in Granville

Hotel & Restaurant des Bains

Walk in the footsteps of the famous fashion designer Christian Dior

A place full of charm

The museum is in fact the childhood home where Christian Dior grew up with his family.

This house is located on the cliff, facing the Channel Islands and the Mont-Saint-Michel. Christian Dior spent his childhood in Granville and was particularly fond of the soul of the family residence, acquired in 1906.

This villa, called "Les Rhumbs", stands on the cliff facing the Channel Islands. From the top of the cliff you have a breathtaking view of the sea.

Unfortunately, after the death of his mother, Madeleine, his father did not have enough money to keep the house. He was obliged to sell it to the Granville town council who opened the garden to the public in 1938.

Long after Christian Dior's death, in 1997, his childhood home became the "Christian Dior Museum".

The birth of the Christian Dior Museum

The initiative to transform the house "Les Rhumbs" into a museum came from the designer's little cousin, Jean-Luc Dufresne.

Indeed, several projects had already been set up previously, such as the "Christian Dior, the other himself" exhibition in Granville. The latter was used to create a fund with donations from relatives and purchases from the town hall.

In 1991, the association "Présence de Christian Dior" made it possible to fit out the house, acquire new collection pieces and obtain donations. As time went on, the house evolved into an exhibition space.

What to see at the Christian Dior Museum?

It is the only museum in France to pay exclusive tribute to a fashion designer. It has 3 floors where you can see collection pieces and objects belonging to Christian Dior.

The museum will allow you to immerse yourself in the life of the Dior family. You will see photos and personal items of the family.

You will learn who Christian Dior really is and where he came from. You will also discover dresses, some of which have made the headlines in the biggest magazines!

Temporary exhibitions are also on display on themes related to the history of fashion and couture... Exhibitions that illustrate, for example, the most beautiful pieces of Christian Dior's collections.

The Dior Garden

The museum is complemented by the magnificent gardens that surround the villa...

It is therefore impossible to talk about the Christian Dior Museum without mentioning the house garden. From a very young age, the designer had ideas for the design of this incredible place.

In 1925, he replaced the greenhouse with a pergola with a water mirror. His mother later added a rose garden.

Despite the fact that the city bought the house, the town council kept the concept and continued to maintain this majestic park. During your visit to the museum, take the opportunity to discover it and admire the varieties of flowers and plants.
