- The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel
The Bishop of Avranches founded a sanctuary on Mount Tomb in 708, after three successive appearances of the archangel Saint Michael. The site becomes one of the largest centers of medieval pilgrimage.
The abbey was abandoned by the monks in 1790 and is listed as a historic monument in 1874. Nowadays, 2 communities of monks and nuns provide daily prayers.
We advise you to visit the terrace of the West, an ideal belvedere to admire the bay, especially at the time of the great tides.
If your stay occures in July and August, we recommend you to visit the Mont Saint-Michel abbey by night. The staging with music and light shows brings additional magic to this visit.
